Memoria

“Memoria” is a powerful dance reflection on economic and social challenges, conveyed through dynamic music and choreography.

Background

The huge, ever-widening gap between rich and poor and its struggle on a global scale between different countries and continents in our global village as well as in personal human relationships in everyday life – that’s what “Memoria” is about.

Three performers symbolically represent the struggle between economic dependence, exploitation, human relationships, (un)consciousness, empathy and disinterest in a microcosm of three individuals from two worlds that are one but yet separate…

The piece was performed for the first time in Greece and has already been presented at international dance festivals in Austria and Israel.

The task

Art as a mirror

As an artist, I see it as my duty to convey messages to the audience. I focus primarily on environmental and social issues in order to pass on some of my insight to those who are caught in the maelstrom of everyday life.

Overall, my goal with “Memoria” and other artistic works is not only to offer entertaining dance performances, but also to promote profound reflections on the pressing problems of our time.

Through art we want to help raise awareness and ultimately inspire change.

Realization

Urban dance theater

The challenges in implementing this vision are manifold. On the one hand, it’s about translating the core idea into a dance performance that is both entertaining and meaningful. “Memoria” is concerned with depicting the struggle between economic dependence, exploitation and human relationships through the symbolic interaction of three dancers representing two contrasting worlds. This requires careful selection of dancers and music that expresses the dynamic contrasts and resulting tensions.

Results

Dance as language

The results of our performances reflect the intensive work we put into the conception and execution of our pieces. Despite many viewers’ desire for pure entertainment, we manage to convey our messages and make people think. As a former street dancer with a deep understanding of life outside of societal norms, I strive to use emotions and body language as universal languages to convey our messages across cultural and linguistic barriers.
